column identifiers in perform

He is trying to build perform screens. On these screens he will have many 1 character columns. How can he identify each column if he has more than thirty-six 1 character columns? EXAMPLE: [a] [b] [c] [d] ..... [z] a=column1, autonext; b=column2, autonext; c=column3, autonext; d=column4, autonext; . . z=column26, autonext; I don't why he is doing it this way. All I know is this is what he and his boss want to do. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
