It is constrained by the smallest value out of: * The amount of disk space available. * The largest file ulimit allows you to create. * 2 GB on 32-bit machines -- lseek doesn't allow you to use offsets bigger than a signed 32-bit long on those machines. THese constraints have applied to all versions of C-ISAM.
