could your please explain "point the binaries to
the 7.3 version" ! How does this work ? What to do ?

I imagine he means that you should set your INFORMIXDIR to
/opt/informix/7.31 (or whatever directory structure you are using), so that
when you type oninit, the one in 7.31 the bin directrory is executed.

This simply means that you have to use the 9.21 binaries
to do the reversion (onmode -b), then use the 7.3 binaries
to re-start the informix engine. The easiest way to have
several versions of informix is to install them in different
directories and point the INFORMIXDIR environment variable
to the one you want to use. Of course, you also have to adjust
your PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH accordingly. It would cause
havoc if you just set INFORMIXDIR to the 7.3 directory tree
and leave PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH still pointing to the
9.21 binaries.
