Sorry to barge in on this thread but... 4GL does have its uses, but as a language for new development its dead. I stopped doing 4GL in '96. Not enough work and I got caught in a couple of ESQL/C gigs, then Sybase/C++ along with Unix Sysadmin work. Today Java and C are the languages of choice. Yeah C is still a great language for certain tasks and if you're going to go OO, then go to Java. If you're doing database work again ESQL/C and Java, with the preference on Java. (JDBC is YOUR *FRIEND* ;-) The nice thing about Java is that you're not locked in to a specific back end. If you design your classes and utilize the features of JDBC, you will have minimal work if you have to change your data source. Portability is key too. Oh yeah, Informix did try to do an OO version. It flopped. I guess I'm showing my age.... ;-)
