Chris, This will be available when OnLine 6.0 (scheduled towards end of '93 I believe) is released. With 6.0 administrators will have the ability to backup/restore at the dbspace level. Since you can specify which dbspace you wish to create a table or database in, you could create dbspaces which contains only your volatile tables or databases and archive/restore those dbspaces.
