string to text conversion

Any programmers out there know how to convert a string to a text for insert into a table? The programmers are using power builder and are capture sql statements for insert into a text column. The same programmers are also want to use anupdate trigger to set a time stamp colum = today upon update of any column in the row. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
