Active transaction logging / Level 0 Backup
Posted in 2009

Hi,
how can I activate transaction logging for a specific database without having
to make a level 0 backup for the entire instance producing offline-time for
all databases of that instance? Is there somthing like level 0 backup for
specific dbspaces? I only found restore with ontape for specific dbspaces.
Thanks and best regards
Dagmar
First, taking an archive of your server does not produce ANY offline time at
all! Informix was the pioneer in taking ONLINE archives (that's why the
first server based version of Informix was called OnLine).
Second, there is no other way to initiate logging on a database that does
not already have it other than to export the database and reimport it into a
new database with logging turned on from the beginning.
Third, you CAN take dbspace only archives using onbar, but that will not
permit you to change the logging status of any databases in those dbspaces.
Only a full level 0 archive can be used for that.

If a database is created without logging, and you need to change that. I've
always set the TAPEDEV to /dev/null and used ontape (ontape -s -B
<database>) to change to buffered logged. Once that's completed, change
TAPEDEV back to its normal setting and immediately run a level 0 archive.

Hi,
you can do a fake level 0 backup (set TAPEDEV /dev/null) and afterwards
execute
ontape -s -L 0 -U <database>
That changes the logging state of database <database> , but you are not able
to restore that database from any backup taken prior to that change.
If there is activity on the new database before a real level 0 backup is
executed, it might even be impossible to restore the other databases up to the
current state.

Andreas
