Onunload error opening TBLspace
Posted in 2017
On IDS 11.50.FC5 (Solaris 10 SPARC), onunload of two databases in one instance failed partway through with "Error opening TBLspace... ISAM error: illegal argument to ISAM function", with no indication of which tblspace. Suggestions were to run the full range of oncheck tests (-cc, -cr, -cD, -cI, -ce, -cR, -cS) and check online.log/OS logs; all came back clean. Art Kagel concluded there was no corruption and it was likely an onunload bug worth a PMR; others suggested unloading table by table and trapping errno 102 via 'onmode -I 102' to produce an assertion file for support. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

I am trying to do an onunload on a database. I have done this numerous times
on other similar databases. On this database and a second database in the same
instance, when I try to do an onunload, it starts to wright to tape (disk).
After a while I receive the following error:
Error opening TBLspace...
ISAM error: illegal argument to ISAM function.
It is not very descriptive, it does not tell me which TBLspace or anything
else.
Has anyone seen this before?
Thank you.
Larry
I would oncheck everything.

Do oncheck to validate your database and instance and this may tell something
that is not good.

Also
oncheck -cR
oncheck -cS
Also check the online.log and OS logs (/var/log/message or equivalent) for

Ok. So now I have done oncheck -cc, cr, cD, cI on the two databases and a
general oncheck -ce all with no error messages.
Anything else that I need to do?

No errors with oncheck -cR on each of the two databases. oncheck -cS without a
parameter just blinks with now messages.

I did oncheck -cS on both the dbspaces that are associated with the two

OK, so all significant onchecks passes, so no damage. That can only mean
one of things...
A bug in onunload or something REALLY unusual in some column (like a NAN or
-NAN in a FLOAT or SMALLFLOAT column). Given that onunload doesn't
interpret what it reads, it just writes pages out to disk, the latter is
unlikely to be the cause. PMR time?

I'd suggest trapping errno 102 (illegal arg) on server side: 'onmode -I
102' to enable the trap -> onunload -> wait on error and assertion
being created for the trap -> 'onmode -I' to disable the trap.
(consider temporarily disabling shmem dumping for this exercise)
-> open a PMR with the resulting af file.

I am trying to do an onunload on a database. I have done this numerous
times
on other similar databases. On this database and a second database in the
same
instance, when I try to do an onunload, it starts to wright to tape (disk).
After a while I receive the following error:
Error opening TBLspace...
ISAM error: illegal argument to ISAM function.
It is not very descriptive, it does not tell me which TBLspace or anything
else.
Has anyone seen this before?
Thank you.

Really long shot here, but have you confirmed that the filesystem is not out
of space (if unloading to disk) or that there's not a problem with the tape
(if unloading to tape)?
Does it work for single tables?

I did oncheck -cS on both the dbspaces that are associated with the two
tables. No errors.

Thank you for all of the responses. I have over 100 tables, so I think I will
start with the onmode -l 102 option to see if we can figure out which table is
having a TBLspace issue. If that does not work, then I will try unloading
individual tables. The reason I don't try individual tables first is because I
am getting a 30GB file before I receive the error, so I know a lot of tables
are being unloaded before the issue.
Thank you.

Also: a per-table onunload is a pretty different beast - even onunloading
and onloading all tables in a database wouldn't get you the same as a
database onunload/load.
Reason: a database onunload would just contain the whole database (except
for certain out-of-row data?), including blindly onunloading all system
tables, whereas per-table onunload would consider only a subset of system
catalog content pertaining to a table. For instance all stored procedures
and triggers would not be contained.
