Linux: IDS LE replication, IECC & DBCockpit agents - WHEN?
Posted in 1999
Asked in 1999 whether IDS 7.3 LE on Linux would ever gain replication, IECC and DB-Cockpit agents. Answers: never in 7.3; replication was expected with IDS.2000 (9.2) on Linux, while IECC is Windows-based (an "OnWeb" successor was announced) and DB-Cockpit's inclusion was unclear. Informix's line was that features follow demand, so users should lobby directly. A side discussion covered ON-Bar's absence on Linux, blamed on no Linux storage manager (Legato/ISM), though Legato client support for Linux was reportedly appearing; workarounds suggested were cooked files plus standard Linux backup tools. No firm dates or resolution recorded.

Topics: Platform-Specific Issues
Dear all, I was hoping that maybe somebody would have some inside info on this, since I was unable to squeeze anything out of my rep. So, Linux IDS LE 7.3 don't have replication, IECC or DBCockpit agents. Does anyone have any idea is this scheduled? I will significantly impact my buying decisions. Thanks, Andrej Falout
Informix's position is that these features would be developed if there is a business need for them on the Linux platform. So, if you need these features you should let Informix know in no uncertain terms (don't trust sales staff to relay feature requests). Hopefully the features will be there when you need them. Art S. In IDS 7.3, never. In IDS.2000 (aka 9.2), when it is released on Linux -- relatively soon I think, but I don't have a release date at my fingertips. Well, replication will be included. I'm not sure about IECC (it runs on Windows, of course), so it won't be directly available on Linux. And I'm not sure whether DB-Cockpit is part of IDS.2000 either. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>

Any chance of porting onbar?

The problem with porting OnBar is that none of the Storage Manager vendors,
including Legato which provides Informix with the delivered Storage Manager
in IDS 7.3x, currently support Linux.

According to the Legato Software Compatibility Guide, Release Q299 from May 2, 1999, Linux (explicitly RedHat 5.2) is supported in their ClientPak5.5 for UNIX. So it should be possible to port OnBar and at least the Informix interface module for Legator Networker. AFAIK, other vendors of network storage solutions do support Linux clients as well, but I don't have details on that. Or do you imply that OnBar requires the storage manager server software to run on the database server itself? Regarding onbar with Linux:
Chances are great that you're going to be using cooked files for the
near future, unless you're one of the brave souls using raw files,
which I hear are now supported, but I've not yet used.
In the event of using cooked files for the dbspaces, you are able to
use the standard backup products available in Linux, or at least
copy them to another system that does support your backup to tape,
and complete your backup.
In terms of using onbar, I've said it before, will say it again,
test EVERY restore feature of onbar and see if it really meets your
needs. Unless you can restore your backups to your satisfaction
onbar is useless. It's a necessary test, just like the way hospitals
have disaster drills. You will learn a lot. A backup is useless
unless you can restore from it.
Informix has also announced that they are releasing sometime in the
near future "Onweb" the next IECC. If you want a screen shot of it
stop by my web site.
Thanks,
Tim

It should be, but has it been done yet?

Other vendors do not matter as much as Legato since Legato makes IDS/ISM.

No, onbar does not require that the storage manager run on the server,
however, IDS is promised to be delivered with a storage manager so if you
do not need more than 4 devices and 4 concurrent threads you can use onbar
without paying for a storage manager. If Legato does not port the
Networker Lite (which is IDS/ISM) to Linux then Informix cannot deliver a
workable onbar/storage manager setup.
I believe it will soon happen, but truth is it has not happened yet.
