RE: Some basic questions..NET/STAR

Bob Baskett replied on this string that IHO SE was best for lots of smaller databases, no time sensitive type things, and OnLine best for OLTP, bigDBs etc. Thats always been my general opinion too. But then someone else responded that STAR will not be required with 6.0 (OnLine?). If this is so, then if we were to purchase software for, say, several HP platforms, would it be true that to make the DBs available from one platform to another, invisible to the users, that we would need only to buy SQL/4GL and OnLine engine (not STAR/NET)? Does the SE engine also incorporate STAR functions or is the networking only for OnLine? That would mean there is another good reason to put lots of smaller, non-time sensitive DBs under OnLine: network access. Will 6.0 allow restoration of single DBs, or even tables? (Guess that was more than one question!) Thanks again for the wealth of info this list provides. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ann Barnes, UNIX System Administrator \\ /\\ /\\ Letterkenny Army Depot, SDSLE-DOE \\ /\\ & \\/ \\ alumna Chambersburg, PA 17201 AV 570-9869/717-267-9869 \\/ \\/ \\ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
