Instance in Initialization mode
Posted in 2013
Topics: Server Administration, Logging & Checkpoints
Hi,
Below is the server details:
informix 9.40.FC8
HP UX B.11.11 U 9000/800
The instance was in CKPT REQD mode with BLOCKED checkpoint archive. We tried
to restart the instance. While bringing it down the following message was
captured.
14:54:47 WARNING: Checkpoint appears stalled and may not complete
before the database server shuts down.
14:54:48 IBM Informix Dynamic Server Stopped.
Now when we tried to start the instance again,it goes in initialization mode.
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.40.FC8 -- Initialization -- Up 00:05:44
-- 75580 Kbytes
We tried to get the instance down using onmode -ucky it gives the following
warning:
onmode: Shutdown of the database server shall be done by killing
the database server processes, as the database server is
in Initialization mode and cannot accept onmode commands.
We tried kill the oninit processes through root login but that too failed. Now
we are not able to either start or stop the instance.
Any quick response on this is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Sushant
1. ipcs to display the shared memory segments for your instance.
2. ipcrm -m <shm_id> (execute as root and make sure you got the right id)
3. prepare for the worse (I don't know how the instance was violated,
but you just have to prepare for the worse,
you may have to restore the instance)

ipcs is not an issue. When I shutdown the instance, all the memory segments
are closed in ipcs but the oninit processes at the OS level remain intact. We
are not able to kill these oninit processes even thru root login.
Kill -9 will always work, but as has been said, be prepared to maybe have
to restore a recent archive and roll forward your logical logs. So, I
sincerely hope that you have good archives that have been verified, that
you backup your logical logs religiously and keep them for at least two
archives back (in case the most recent archive has been trashed somehow),
and finally that all of your databases are logged - preferably using
unbuffered logging.
If some of these points are not true, I hope that you have extended support
from IBM for you out-of-support version!
