You should run update statistics. It is up to Informix optimizer, if it will
run index or sequential search.
If data has only a few data types (M-male adn F-female) the optimizer use
sequential search (index search
would have no effect). And you should run update statistics to supplay
optimizer with data so it can decide
if it wil run indexes. (if ther is a little data also seq. search is used)
