I haven't done this myself, but where at a presentation and talked to people doing similar things at the Informix conference. An example is Sabre who is doing this with Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option. A key consept for them was not only the ability to create, store and retrieve objects in the database but also the ability to execute methods inside the engine. This technology gave them the ability to process substantially larger amounts of data than what you are talking about with extreme performance results. With the Informix engine you also have the option of creating specialized storage management in case you should need that. Of course traditional object oriented databases also have their place, but the flexibility of the Informix ORDBMS technology is hard to beat. Also there is an issue of how you intend to use the data over it's life cycle. Sometimes you want to allways access and use it via the same objects. In other cases you want to be able to decouple your data from the objects to gain free access to it in many different ways. In the last case ORDBMS technology is normally a substantially better solution. Of course modern ODBMSs can also access the data independently of the original objects, but the ORDBMS technology have more maturity in this area from their RDBMS background and significant power. It may be an idea to look at what Sabre and others are doing with the Informix ORDBMS products. It was realy impressive, and they had significant experiance and knowhow in this area and where very clear on Informix having the best available technology for their purposes. >The objects of our intent interest are Informix, ObjectStore and >Versant.
