Informix Multi-language support (GLS)
Posted in 2003
Lloyd asked how to store multi-language (e.g. Japanese, German, French) data in IDS 9.4 on Windows 2000 with DB_LOCALE=en_us.utf8. Gerald Cousins advised setting CLIENT_LOCALE per language/code set at insert time (e.g. ja_jp.sjis, de_de.1252), noting the server needs matching UTF-8 locales installed via the International Language Supplement (ILS 3.30), and that UTF-8 data can be inserted directly with CLIENT_LOCALE=en_us.utf8. He also suggested checking the source page's charset and that display fonts/encoding may cause '?' characters. Lloyd got French data loading but still saw '?' for Shift-JIS Japanese; the thread ends with his follow-up questions unanswered, so no final resolution is recorded. (Several replies were garbled base64.)

Dear All,
I have IDS 9.4 on win, 2000. I want to have multi-language support for my
database. I have set my DB_LOCALE variable to en_us.utf8, I also created a new
database and a table but cannot proceed further. Now how do i insert
multi-language data in it. How do i insert data thru dbaccess and what other
settings i need to do to insert data thru client machines. Maybe you people in
US/Europe may be in a better position to help me as you might be using more
than one language in your database. Please advice...
Best Regards,
Lloyd
Hi Lloyd,
here is the answer I gave you the last time you posed this question,
I am not what type (language, code set) of data as an example I have used
the windows code set and three random languages
set CLIENT_LOCALE to ja_jp.sjis
Insert Japanese data
set CLIENT_LOCALE to ru_ru.1253
insert Russian data
set CLIENT_LOCALE to de_de.1252
insert German data.
To use the locale combination
DB_LOCALE en_us.utf8
CLIENT_LOCALE de_de.1252
you need to have 3 locales on your server,
en_us.utf8, de_de.utf8 and de_de.1252,
de_de.utf8 is not installed by default and will need to be installed via
the ILS. (International Language Supplement) current version is 3.30.
This file would be installed to $INFORMIXDIR/gls/lc11/de_de/e01c.lco (utf8
locales are always called e01c.lco)
I want to add if you have data already in the utf8 code set you can set
CLIENT_LOCALE to en_us.utf8 and insert the data without reconverting it.
Gerry.

Although
I found your choice of a Phoenician dialect not used since the 4th
century an interesting way to illustrate multi-language concepts, I'm not
sure the general population would decipher your lucid insights in the form
presented here. :)

Hi Lloyd,
here is the answer I gave you the last time you posed this question,
I am not what type (language, code set) of data as an example I have used
the windows code set and three random languages
set CLIENT_LOCALE to ja_jp.sjis Insert Japanese data
set CLIENT_LOCALE to ru_ru.1253 insert Russian data
set CLIENT_LOCALE to de_de.1252 insert German data.

Hi Gerry,
Thanks for your feedback, Can you give me the link where i can download ILS
3.0. I did try the steps mentioned by you. Since i did not have the e01c
locale file in japanese dir, i copied it from en_us dir. I set my
DB_LOCALE=en_us.utf8 and CLIENT_LOCALE=ja_jp.sjis and created a database &table. Then i tried inserting junk data thru 'Alt 171, 172 keys' in to the
table, i could, but this works in default setting too. But when i try to
insert japanese data, i.e. i tried to copy some data from japanese site and
paste it over here, the data comes as "?????????????". I am still not sure
whether my database supports multi-lingual data. How do i insert data. I even
tried setting both DB_LOCALE & CLIENT_LOCALE to en_us.utf8 as well as
ja_jp.sjis, but no luck. Can you please let me know whether i have missed
something. Please advice. Also do i have to change my CLIENT_LOCALE again and
again if i need to insert some other language. For. eg. In one record i need
to insert japanese data, in second german data, and so on. So what would be my
setting for DB_LOCALE & CLIENT_LOCALE. Please advice.
Best Regards,
Lloyd
Hi Gerry, I even download ILS 3.30 from IBM and tried the setting DB_LOCALE & CLIENT_LOCALE to ja_jp.sjis. Now how to insert japanese data into it. I tried to copy/paste from goole but it stores as "????". Please advice. Regards, Lloyd
Hi Lloyd, I can think of two potential causes, One, you inserted the data using an incorrect value of CLIENT_LOCALE. Did you check the code set of the data that you where copying? In IE, Menu option view source, <META HTTP-EQUIV="content-type" CONTENT="text/html;charset=UTF-8"> This indicates the code set of the data. CLIENT_LOCALE should use an equilivant code set. The second cause could be that your application that is displaying the text uses a font that will not support utf8, Unload your data to a text file and view it with IE (after loading the file select the menu option view -> encoding -> UNICODE (utf-8)). Hi Gerry, Thanks for your prompt feedback, I have set both DB_LOCALE & CLIENT_LOCALE to utf8. I could load some french data to my database. Then I tried to load japanense data but they are in shift-jis codeset, when i tried to encode it in unicode format it stores "?????". When i try to change my locales to shift-jis it gives me an error. Then how do i take care of it. Also is it possible to load multi-language data simultenously with locales set to utf8 or i need to set it to their respective locales. For eg. 1 record i need to load in german, the other in french, do i have to change my client_locale again and again or the utf8 codeset will take care of it. I have also downloaded ILS 3.30. How do i proceed further. Please advice. Thanks in advance, have a nice day. Best Regards, Lloyd
