Problems running IDS 11.70 on Windows Server 2012
Posted in 2017
User asked about potential problems migrating Informix 11.70 from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012 R2. One respondent suggested Linux would offer better performance and stability. Another noted IDS 11.70 wasn't officially certified on Windows Server 2012.

Our company is planning to move our Informix 11.70 from the Windows 2008 server it is currently on to Windows server 2012 R2. What problems have you encountered running Informix 11.70 on Windows 2012?
I'm going to recommend that you run your Informix on Linux. Performance will be better and the database will be more stable. Art Art S. I'd agree with Art, But I don't think that we certified any version of 11.70 on windows server 2012. Dear Mary: My company runs IDS exclusively on Windows servers, as that is what our customers need to run, we have very few issues with performance or stability. We have multiple installations of IDS 11.70.x on both Windows 2008 and Windows 2012 R2 (with an occasional Windows 2012 (non R2)). I suggest if possible that you use the latest build of IDS 11.70.x or at least download the latest FixPacks and iFixPacks. I do recall that with earlier builds having to run the IDS install package in Windows 7 compatibility mode however I do not believe that to be the case with newer builds. Best regards, Martin M. Yeah, about that. My company sells a product which currently uses
Informix IDS 12.1 (started with 10) on Windows. We have several
thousand customers using the product. Every time I try to get something
that works seamlessly on ****ix to work properly under Windows, I have
some problem or other:
- Performance is not as good. I did a test where we replaced the
Windows based Informix DB with the same DB on CentOS on the same
hardware. Throughput increased 400%
- Windows does not do a good job with SMP, doesn't seem to understand
it. Does not spread the load over CPUs, just hands any new task to the
next CPU according to the clock as opposed to the load.
- External tables and loading are not doing well (current problem). In
migration situations we have to go back to dbload.
- Memory is artificially constrained. Also, you have to be careful not
to allow third party products to load into memory where Informix wants
to be.
- Lots of customers don't like having the Informix account, oh guess you
can't use the sysadmin database then - or rather you have to go around
your elbow to scratch your posterior.
- Third party backup software - I've had more disk corruption caused by
these than I've ever seen under any ***ix
I could go on at greater length. Windows was a poor choice.
