The companies that impliment JDBC as a server are starting to call this a three-tier architecture because there are three components, UI, JDBC server, database. Take a note, all you JDBC companies - THIS IS NOT THREE-TIER! "Three-tier" is an application architecture and describes the partitioning of an applcation. Simply placing system services on differing machines does not constitute a three-tier application architecture. (Symantec at least calls thier JDBC system a three-tier "network" architecture as if it is differentiating it from a three-tier application architecture. But then they go on show how their three tier is better than a three-tier application architecture - so they don't quite get it yet) Let's see, I have an app that uses DNS, NIS, NFS, Oracle7 Server, Oracle Names, and Powerbuilder ... gee, I must have a 6-tier system!!!
