However we have 10 cpus and 512 meg memory. We have gotten our index builds down to 1 hr. We did this doing 2 things. The greastest bang for the buck was increasing the amount of temp dbspaces as specified by the DBSPACETEMP variable. Initially, we bumped the dbspaces from 8 to 14. The dbspaces were 500,000 meg each. Recently we upgraded our OS and reconfigured all our drives. Now I have 16 temp dbspaces at 250,000 each. We found that by increasing the amount of temp dbspaces gave us better index performance than just having several large spaces. The second thing that we do is set PDQPRIORITY very high when building the index. Usually the setting is 80, but we have at times of low system activity set it to 100.
