System failure
Posted in 2005
A user lost two disks in a RAID 5 array and asked how to perform a point-in-time restore from an on-archive (ON-Archive) online backup. The only substantive answer was to follow the restore procedure in the Archive and Backup manual of the 7.3x documentation set, plus a strong warning against using RAID 5 (with a pointer to www.baarf.com). The rest of the thread drifted into reports that the baarf.com site was temporarily unreachable, later fixed. No detailed restore steps or confirmation of a successful recovery are recorded.

Sirs, Our two of the hard disks have failed on the Raid 5 hence we need to restore the backup. We are taking backup using On-archive utility hence please let us know what would be the procedure for restoration for on line backup. We want to restore up to the time of failure. Read the Archive and Backup manual in the 7.3x manual set for instructions. Oh and remember: NO RAID5!!! NO RAID5!!! NO RAID5!!! NO RAID5!!! NO RAID5!!! NO RAID5!!! If you haven't figured out that your situation is common and one of the main reasons to not use RAID5, see my posting and others' posts on the BAARF web site: www.baarf.com Art S. Bummer. The Wayback machine has a copy. See: http://web.archive.org/web/20040519115442/http://www.baarf.com/ And I'll contact the originators and see what can be done. Thanks. Art S. Nien, nor in German <;-}>. It's in English, though the owners are in Norway IB. Seems there was a config error with their forwarder when they switched hosts. Baarf is back now. ;-) Art ----- Original Message ----- From: Diane Lavoie <diane.lavoie@domtar.com> At: 9/ 8 12:05 Hello, www.baarf.com it is written is germain, is this correct?
