Cannot start explain
Posted in 2005
A user on IDS 9.4 / HP-UX 11i could use "SET EXPLAIN ON" in dbaccess on one server but got "error 1: Not owner EXPLAIN output file" on another, despite seemingly identical installs and permissions. Replies suggested likely causes: the engine having been started as root rather than informix, no write permission on the current working directory where sqexplain.out is created (check the whole directory tree), an existing sqexplain.out owned by another user, and ownership mismatches on raw devices (compare ls -l vs ls -lL). The original poster never replied, so no confirmed resolution is recorded.

We are running IDS 9.4 on HPUX
11.I on two different boxes. On one box I can run "set explain on" from within
dbaccess fine. On the other, I get an error 1: Not owner EXPLAIN output file.
I have been comparing the Informix installations on the two systems, and have
not yet found a differnece there. File permissions are OK.
Has anyone run into this before?
I have seen permission/owner issues when linking to a raw
device and the
owner/group information is not correct at the raw device level. In
other words there's a difference in "ls -l" vs. "ls -lL" output.
Hope this helps (or at least eliminates another possibility).

Yes,
I've seen this when the engine was started as root instead of
informix.
Thanks

It may also
be a matter of permissions of the current directory for
read+write or permissions on the directory tree.

"File permissions are OK" for which directories? The sqexplain.out file gets
created in the local directory where dbaccess was initiated. If you do not
have write premission for that directory, that error will occur.
Michael Hoffman
Are
also the file permissions for the Explain output file and the parent
folder the same ? Perhaps created by another user.
