Need help with OnLine

I am using Informix-Online for Solaris and got a question: i programmed a select statement wich produces a different result set (number of rows, other column-values) when i only change one of the result-fields (the projection) without changing the rest of the query. Is this an error of the optimizer or can there be any legal circumstances in which such a behaviour can be explained?? Thanks in advance, Dirk Schnorpfeil.
