As far as I know, the only way to achieve what you want is to use a stored
procedure that gets the index name as a parameter. Unfortunately, SPL only
allows you to write stored procedures - i.e. only via the CREATE PROCEDURE
mechanism, you can't write an SQL script on the fly using SPL - which can be
done with ORACLE's equivalent PL/SQL. You must create a stored procedure.
Having previously used ORACLE, I feel the '&' substitution mechanism
available in SQL*Plus (the ORACLE equivalent to DB-Access) is very
handy and should be very simple, IMHO, to integrate into DB-Access,
given that DB-Access is written in ESQL/C which has excellent dynamic
SQL capabilities.
I'm very happy that INFORMIX has implemented the NVL and CASE
functionality (I'm waiting - impatiently - for it to be available with
Universal
Server), it's a good start but there is still room for improvement.

Avi.
