which data migration tool to use?
Posted in 2003
The poster wanted to move data from IDS 7.30 on HP-UX 10.20 (32-bit) to IDS 7.31 on HP-UX 11.00 (64-bit) without unloading tables individually, and asked whether an ontape restore could cross versions. Advice was to install 7.30 on the target, restore the archive there, then install 7.31 over it and let the engine convert (plus update statistics) — but the poster said 7.31 won't install on HP-UX 10.20 and his ontape attempt failed ("unable to fork server connection"), so he fell back to dbexport/dbimport (-ss) using a large staging disk. Others suggested plain dbexport/dbimport for smaller databases or onunload/onload. No confirmed outcome is recorded.

Hi,
I am planning to migrate my IDS from version 7.30 to
7.31.
I have setup the same instance name and dbspace name
and chunk softlink in the target machine.
Can someone advice me on which tool is easiest best
used to migrate the data from 7.30 to 7.31 version
without hassle of loading or unloading individual
tables?
Can ontape restore the data from older version to
later version?
Pls recommend me an appropriate tool that offers
hassle free migration. Many thanks.

What are your source are target machine and O/S?
The easiest way is to install a copy of 7.30 on you target machine, restore
an archive into it then shut the engine down. Install 7.31 over the 7.30 and
start the engine again. Informix will take care of all structure conversions
and all you will need to do is to update statistics.
There is a bit of dependency here on having compatible tape drives and being
able to get 7.30 for your new machine. (you could try migrating on the old
machine and then restoring an archive to the new).
Incidentally which sub-version of 7.31 are you using as there are some
show-stopping bugs and 'need to knows' in some sub-versions.

Hi Keith,
My source machine is HP-UX 10.20 (32bit) running IDS
7.30.
My target machine is HP-UX 11.00 (64bit) running IDS
7.31.
IDS 7.31 cannot be installed in hpux 10.2 and vice
versa. So the suggestion of installing 2 version in
one machine will not work.
Obviously I tried to using ontape but it failed, error
message is ".... unable to fork server connection ..."
I guest ontape is not a suggested way to go and it is
dangerous.
So I give up and will try using dbimport and dbexport
with -ss option. I've requested my administratio to
add a big harddisk for the staging area for unloading
.unl files.

If databases
are not big and each database is not spread on different
dbspaces, then I would suggest simple dbexport (without -ss)/dbimport.
All tables are created with single extent for each table with simple
dbimport option. If -ss option used, it creates using existing table extent
sizes.

Kheng,
Hi. We will be doing a similar migration soon as well. Going from HPUX 10.20
with IDS 9.21 to HPUX 11i with IDS 9.21 or 9.3 (new server). Have you
considered using onunload/onload to migrate the databases? I have heard that
there are some caveats with onunload/onload, but would be curious to know if
it would work in your situation (and mine). I was planning to give it a go
when the new server arrives.

I
just did upgraded from 7.30.UC5 to 7.31.UC4 on HP-UX 10.20. I installed
7.31 over top of the 7.30 and everything worked just fine.
