CLI cannot handle SQL statements bigger than 32k?

It appears that CLI cannot handle an SQL statement bigger than 32k. When trying an ExecDirect, the driver comes back with a 'memory allocation failure (-11061)'. When trying with Execute, the program just disappears without a trace. Is this is known limitation of CLI? Client is VB5, NT4 and CLI2.8. Access method is RDO 2.0.
