how to get the value of a typed-in field

Hi! In informix-4gl, (I have 1.10.03), I would like to inspect what the user has typed in. I am using an INPUT statement, that gives me the value of a field with the AFTER FIELD clause. However, with the ON KEY clause, and then an IF INFIELD(field1) statement, I know that the user has typed something into the field I want, but I cannot get it from the input buffer. Or is there a way? What I am trying to accomplish is to have an alternative for the user: either what is typed in is accepted as is, or it is checked against a special file. The program should make the difference by either having it terminated with the accept key, or with a special function key, F5 or something. I hope I made myself clear... Thanks!
