If you do not have immediate, or near term need for any functionality which is part of 7.x, and 5.xx is doing the job, why upgrade?? There are many features however, that you may want, even if running on uni-processor systems (i.e. DBSPACE level backup/restore). I have been running 7.x in a test environment for almost a year, on Sequent. I recently converted our production system to a pre-release version of 7.1 a few weeks ago, and am pleased. I just received a copy of the official 7.1 "RELEASE", and am confident that it will address most if not all, of the few remaining problems in 7.1. I would suggest NOT upgrading to 6.x, mainly because, like any new release, it has some problems. Getting any of these problems resolved, will be difficult, since Informix is essentially treating 7.x as a maintanance release to 6.x. My reasons for upgrading are many. A large database (72GB), running on a 16 proc Sequent, I will be able to exploit many of the features in 7.x. I run a combination of batch and OLTP, and have found 7.x to be a much better version for this. Performance can be more easily monitored and tuned, not too mention the availability of PDQ. If nothing else, just being able to backup/restore, using multiple tape drives, in parallel, is worth upgrading.
