Informix Network Connection
Posted in 2004
A user running IDS 7.30.U on Slackware Linux 9.1 could start the engine with only the shared-memory (onipcshm) connection; adding a soctcp DBSERVERALIASES/NETTYPE made oninit fail with 'listener-thread: err = -27100 ... NSF subsystem error, System error = 2' followed by a PANIC. Replies suggested ontlitcp (dismissed as Solaris-only), dropping the needless /etc/services entry for the shared-memory server, checking that port 1725 isn't already in use (try a high port like 13000), and noted 7.30 was out of support and possibly mismatched with that kernel. No confirmed fix is recorded in the thread.

I am unable to figure out how to make a network connection and would
appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction. On my Slackware
Linux 9.1 system, Informix Dynamic Server 7.30.U, I'm trying to get the
network connection working (so I can use PHP with Informix). The shared
memory connection works fine, but attempting to get the network
connection started is an abject failure (and, yes, I've been through the
Client/Server Communications section of the manual and I've tried
everything I can think of).
With onconfig entries
SERVERNUM 1 # Unique id corresponding to a
Dynamic Server instance
DBSERVERNAME fubar_a # Name of default database server
DBSERVERALIASES fubar_anet # Name of network database server
NETTYPE ipcshm,1,100,CPU # Configure poll thread(s)
for nettype
NETTYPE soctcp,1,100,NET # Configure poll
thread(s) for nettype
DEADLOCK_TIMEOUT 60 # Max time to wait of lock in
distributed env.
RESIDENT 0 # Forced residency flag (Yes = 1, No
= 0)
and sqlhost entries
fubar_a onipcshm fubar informixa
fubar_anet onsoctcp fubar informixanet
and /etc/services entries
informixa 1625/tcp # IBM Informix 7.x engine shared
informixanet 1725/tcp # IBM Informix 7.x engine network
When I execute oninit the online log shows
Sat Mar 13 09:38:53 2004
09:38:53 Event alarms enabled. ALARMPROG =
'/opt/informix/etc/log_full.sh'
09:38:59 DR: DRAUTO is 0 (Off)
09:39:00 Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.30.U Software Serial
Number AAC#A404657
09:39:00 listener-thread: err = -27100: oserr = 2: errstr = :
Internal Communications Error: NSF subsystem error.
System error = 2.
09:39:00 Attempting to bring listener thread down
09:39:00 PANIC: Attempting to bring system down
If I comment out the DBSERVERALIASES and NETTYPE lines in onconfig,
oninit starts fine and everything works as expected.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Isn't it tli and not soc - ie ontlitcp?

There is something bothering me in your configuration:
When using shared memory connection it doesn't make much sense to specify TCP port number i.e. "informixa" in your /etc/services
file. We usually set these connections to dummy in SQLHOSTS file and don't write them to /etc/services file. But this still doesn't
explain your problems...

Those use both entries in /etc/services, and I am aware that "ontlitcp" is Solaris' TLI. Did, however, try that just for the heck of it, and it blew up (of course). Fact is, the shared memory connection works just as expected (with or without the two entries in /etc/services) -- it's the damnfool network connection that's driving me battier that I already was. There just has to be some magic incantation... Thanks for your input.
Not sure if it is related to your problem, but IDS 7.30 hasn't been
supported since March 2003.

Not sure why, Linux seems to be quite particular about making sure you
are running the Kernel the product was compiled on. Slackware 9.1
seems a lot more recent than 7.30 was built on.

I just looked at my sqlhosts (Suse 9.0, IDS 9.40) and I can't see anything wrong in your setup. Why is the error message saying something about NFS?? Maybe pick some large number like 13000 and try again. HTH Michael
