You can execute another "alter index ... to cluster" before declaring the update cursor, but if the where clause on the cursor declare causes informix to use another index though they'll be in a different order. Or you could declare a non-update cursor with an order by then update based on a unique key, but then you won't get the same kind of row locking if that's what you need.
