If you can afford not to use RAID 5 then don't, and steer clear of software based RAID, stick to hardware based. Personally I'd aim for lots of disks on lots of channels as a starting point. I also like lots of tempdbspaces, I like to ensure PSORTTEMP points to 'memory' file system rather than a disk based filesystem.
