Re: OT: DB Marketshare - Follow Up Question

Sigh... What you're facing isn't uncommon. IBM has taken up the arrowhead project and is working towards convergence. Where you see the most migrations are in areas where a business critical / mission critical app has the ISV no longer supporting Informix. This is due to the economic costs of the ISV having to maintain an unprofitable port. (Read no or minimal customers asking for Informix). In these cases, the ISV ususally writes to the lowest common denominator so that they can easily support kludges like "O" and SQLServer.... Those still on Informix will have a more stable environment over time, and there will be less consulting opportunities. IMHO, as an Informix consultant, the best thing to do is to learn and get certified on DB2 and you may also want to brush up on Cloudscape. ;-) The benefits are that areas where Informix excelled in technology will be in DB2 and vice a versa. Again do a simple patent search on both companies and you will see a lot of interesting and valuable research. Also, Rob, you should also cross train your folks in Websphere, Java, etc... But hey, what do I know? ;-) Rob Vorbroker wrote: > Brief Survey - To those of you who act as Informix > Consultants, etc.: > > Are you seeing any change in the market? > Are there more opportunities or less? > In what areas are you seeing growth of opportunities? > Erosion of opportunities? > What part of the world are you working in? > > I don't want this to turn into a doomsday thread but I > can't control that either.
