Various people have suggested DB-Access or ISQL.

This rules out DB-Access and ISQL.

They are.

Yes, of course. But not necessarily as standard! Do you have ESQL/C
on your machine? If so, then I'd suggest that you investigate one of
two avenues.
If you use Perl 5, then try using DBI and DBD::Informix. I've attached
some notes about where to get that from.
If you don't use Perl, then maybe you should try SQLCMD. Version 8 is
available from the IIUG archives, at http://www.iiug.org. However, I've
also attached a shell archive of Version 23 (this should go into the IIUG
archives -- please!). There's a README file which discusses what you need
to do to compile and install the software.

Where is DBD::Informix
======================
The site http://www.hermetica.com/technologia/DBI does not necessarily
contain pointers to the latest version of DBD::Informix.
The latest version of DBD::Informix should be available by accessing:
http://www.perl.org/CPAN/modules/by-module/07_Database_Interfaces
There are two sub-directories: DBI for the latest version of DBI, and DBD
for the latest version of DBD::Informix and all the other DBD modules.
In case of doubt, I use the FTP site:
ftp://wcarchive.cdrom.com/perl/CPAN/modules/by-module/DBD
This is based in Walnut Creek, near San Francisco, CA, USA. There may well
be another CPAN mirror site closer to you -- check in the web pages for The
Perl Institute (http://www.perl.org). Note that CPAN (Comprehensive Perl
Archive Network) automatically multiplexes your download requests to a
mirror site near you.
