In-Reply-To: <1r3jteINNdtn@emory.mathcs.emory.edu> mark@cdin-1.compu.com I think you will find that the index contains the serial number. If I've understood things correctly what happens is this: You create a table (with or without an index) The system creates a .idx file This file contains things like the record number. It also contains enough info to ensure each record is uniquely identifiable (this is why create table t (a char(1)); would also create a .idx file) The point is that the part of the index record used to store the "unique" part of a duplicate key is used to store it int forming the serial number. And 'cos there's only one .idx file per .dat file regardless of the number of indexes, you can only have one serial column per table. | I work with some bloody strange people, and so do they! | |------------------------------------------------------------| | Stuart Hemming | shemminga@cix.compulink.co.uk | | Tudor Labels Ltd | uunet!cix.compulink.co.uk!shemminga | | Roman Bank Bourne | Tel : (+44) 778 426444 | | Lincs PE10 9LQ.
