I'm not sure that the WorkGroup rules have caught up with IBM's fabulous new Processor Value Unit licensing model yet, but remember that these are cores, not cpus. So for a box with, say, UltraSparc IVs, 2 cpus is the limit. Also, and although it doesn't affect your comparison, remember that Informix list prices in the US are over 20% lower than those in Europe.
Quick comment.... MOST of the customers I have worked with in the last year have 'way more' than 4 CPUs. And most times they're not utilizing all of them until I get done with the recommendations. I doubt very much if we would have released WE with it's changed packaging if we thought that it would replace most of the EE customers. That wouldn't make much business sense I would offer. Thanks - Mark. WE as it was defined prior to IDS 10, did not meet customer needs. Although IDS is very strong in the mid-market, most customers needed more than 2 CPUs. So Enterprise Edition was being heavily discounted and special terms and conditions being applied to meet the mid-market needs. Unfortunately, this was resulting in significant "sticker shock" at maintenance renewal time because IBM systems automatically generate renewal invoices with standard pricing. Some customers were getting maintenance renewal notices with pricing very close to what the customer paid for the license. Clearly, the product matrix was not well aligned with what was happening in the market, significant manpower was spent working special bids and negotiating adjusted maintenance rates. With the introduction of IDS Express Edition, it made sense to more closely align the IDS WE definition with market requirements AND with DB2 WGE. We anticipated some Enterprise Edition customers electing to move to the new WE, but also anticipated that most of these customers would be those that were already paying WE prices for EE with special terms. Also, keep in mind that license restrictions preclude WE from being used in a sub-capacity (partitioned) environment. It is truly intended for mid-market or large departmental servers. Besides adding the HDR option, we also changed the WE license so that leaf-node ER servers could be licensed as WE. ER is phenomenal, IDS unique technology that was price prohibitive prior to this change. Any customer who needs to keep data synchronized across multiple servers should investigate ER.
