Posted in 1997
As advertised earlier this year, the IIUG is sponsoring and conducting a technical track at this year's Informix Worldwide Users Conference (IWUC). The IWUC will be held July 22 - 25 in San Francisco CA. An open call for papers was issued oriented around our theme of "News You Can Use." From all of the excellent proposals received, the IIUG Board of Directors is pleased to announce our selections for this year's track. Understanding the OnLine Optimizer, Writing More Efficient SQL Dan Farrell, Principal Consultant, Informix Software (TBA - a Principal Engineer from the OnLine Optimizer Development Team) Dan and an as-yet unnamed Engineer from the Optimizer Development Team discuss in detail the operation of the OnLine query optimizer and how to write SQL statements so they are processed more efficiently. In-depth case studies will illustrate various optimization techniques. The Technical Aspects of Building a Data Warehouse Jack Parker, Consultant, Informix Software Generally lost in discussions of data warehousing are the actual mechanics of building, maintaining, troubleshooting, and auditing the data flows in and out of the warehouse. Jack will draw on his experiences building and maintaining data warehouses to speak about the day-to-day tasks involved in building and running data warehouses. Creating Database-Driven Web Sites Seth Grimes, Director of Server Technology, Magnet Interactive Communications Seth's presentation will examine the architectural and technological options available today for creating database-driven web sites. He will compare approaches for applications in cyber-publishing, electronic commerce, and templated and dynamic web pages. He will review technologies such as Informix's DataBlades, Bluestone's Sapphire/Web, Netscape's LiveWire, Microsoft's Active Server, and scripting language alternatives. Informix-4GL Tips, Tricks, and Optimization Cathy Kipp, Principal Consultant, Database Strategies, Inc. Jonathan Leffler, Principal Software Engineer, Informix Software Though Informix has stopped active enhancement of the Informix-4GL product, it remains the most popular and widely-used of all the Informix development tools. In this session Cathy, the author of the Informix Press book on the product, and Jonathan, a published author on the SQL language and member of the 4GL development team, will discuss how you can use this language more efficiently to write more powerful applications. Exploring the Sysmaster Database and the SMI Lester Knutsen, President, Advanced DataTools Corporation One of the greatest features of the OnLine DSA engine is the ability to monitor engine or instance activities through the Shared Memory Interface (SMI) and the sysmaster database. In this session, Lester will expand upon issues he has already written about in several Informix-oriented publications. He will focus on monitoring users, server configuration, dbspaces, chunks, tables and disk I/O, and the writing of scripts and other utilities to extract this information. Ask The Experts Tim Shetler, Vice President of Product Management, Informix Software Don Top, Director of Database Kernel Engineering, Informix Software Clem Akins, International Technical Support, Informix Software Jonathan Leffler, Principal Software Engineer, Informix Software Troy Hewitt, ATG Principal Engineer, Informix Software Jeff Fried, Principal Engineer, Informix Software Kevin Whitley, Tools Architect, Informix Software Carlton Doe, President, IIUG - moderator A moderated panel discussion, this is your chance to ask the engineers directly involved in the development or maintenance of Informix's products how, or why the products work the way they do and where they are headed. During the IWUC itself, you will be able to submit questions through the "72 Hours in San Farancisco" conference server. Carlton President, IIUG carlton@iiug.org
