You either have to use recursive functions in esql/c or 4gl or you can do it as a single cursor calling a stored procedure which recursively calls other stored procedures that work down the hierarchy in whatever fashion you need, loading the result into an ordered temporary table which the first SP then reads and returns results from. Code fragments to implement parts explosion are in the 4GL by Example book published by Informix. I'm sorry but I don't currently have access to the code we use to implement it.
