Re: database market share 2003
Posted in 2004
Mostly an off-topic flame war: an Informix reader objected to database market-share posts being cross-posted into the Informix group, and traded insults with Oracle-side posters over who was responsible for the cross-posting. The only technical content is incidental: an explanation that "blue suiters"/"Big Blue" refers to IBM, and an IBM developer's outline of DB2 having three separate codebases (LUW, z/OS, OS/400) that share no server-side code but share DRDA and client interfaces, with SQL largely compatible. No technical problem is posed or resolved.

Why don't you complain about EVERYONE else who continues to x-post there, arsehole? I'll post wherever I want, whenever I want and about whatever I want and you can go and shove your offended replies where the sun doesn't shine. Got it?

Have you ever noticed how replies, like the one above by Enor, are never written in Oracle, SQL Server, or Sybase forums? I don't even remember them in the Informix group before purchased. This is a curiosity of the blue suiters. They've replaced 'hear no evil' with 'hear nothing that isn't the party line'. -- Daniel Morgan http://www.outreach.washington.edu/ext/certificates/oad/oad_crs.asp http://www.outreach.washington.edu/ext/certificates/aoa/aoa_crs.asp damorgan@x.washington.edu (replace 'x' with a 'u' to reply)

Is you and Daneil Morgan who cross post. I complain abpout both, and both say I am wrong. You are net kook? Real name Colin James III? I very sorry I dare to complain, I am surely wrong. Is true db2 run same code on all platform? -- Enor
Enor P wrote: > Is true db2 run same code on all platform? Let's see if I can coem up with a dispassionate fact sheet: There are three DB2 codebases in this context: DB2 UDB for LUW This is the codebase that competes on the Linux, Unix and Windows platforms. DB2 UDB for LUW is also the core for DB2 Information Integrator DB2 UDB for z/OS This is the "original" DB2. It runs only on zSeries (Mainframe) Over the years DB2 for z/OS has achieved a roughy 95% marketshare on that platform. Given that IBM mainframes also have a huge marketshare amonst mainframes. DB2 for z/OS is defacto the only signficant player. DB2 UDB for OS/400 This DB2 runs only on iSeries (AS/400) machines. DB2 for OS/400 and the OS/400 are very deeply integrated to the point where it is hard to say where the OS stops and DB2 starts. Peing proprietary DB2 has by definition no competition on this platform and a DB2 is automatically part of a sale of OS/400. These three platforms do not share any server side code. They do share the communication inteface (DRDA whcih is a standard) and the client (CLI, JDBC, ..) The DML and query language match very closely with the exception of differences rooted in legacy wich cannot be changed without breaking customers. However, since each product has a different customer-set SQL features arrive at different times dependening on customer demand. The closer one gets to the physcial layer the more different the products become due to integration. So, if you ask a DBA they will claim big differences. If you ask an application programmer they perceive very few. For example: DB2 UDB for LUW supports a shared nothing architecture (like Informix XPS) while DB2 UDB for z/OS supports shared disc (like Oracle) exploiting special hardware to ensure scalability. But you can download the .Net client software for DB2 and seamlessly operate out of Visual Studio.Net with all three platforms without feeling the diffeerence. (at least that is the promise) Cheers Serge -- Serge Rielau DB2 SQL Compiler Development IBM Toronto Lab
