I installed IDS on a dual processor Pentium Pro system running RedHat
6.0 with the 2.2.5-22smp kernel. I was able to "oninit -i" and the
database initialized and came on-line. However, I am unable to do
anything with it. If I log in as user "informix" and do a "isql - -"
and issue the command "create database fubar;" it hangs... and hangs...
and hangs...
If I bring the engine down I finally get the error:
25587: Network receive failed.
Error in line 1Near character position 1
What have I neglected to do?
Here are my $ONCONFIG and sqlhosts files:

*smack* Gee, I can tell you exactly what I neglected to do: set
LTAPEDEV to /dev/null. I feel like I've been at work for several
hours and just now discovered that I left home without my pants...

I've not had any problems on 2.2.5-15 smp - but I'm curious to know
how you end up with a newer version...oh well, it probably isn't the
issue.
My machines always have data in the NETTYPE entry or entries.
I'd suspect that the fact you have nothing there is the trouble.
Given the names you've set up, I'd expect two NETTYPE entries,
one for the shared memory connections and one for the network
connections.
Since I always use OnMonitor to add those entries, I can't remember
the exact syntax, but there are 3 bits of info - the connection type,
the number of users, and the VP type (CPU or NET), possibly even
in that order:
*** dubious code ***
NETTYPE ipcshm,30,CPU
NETTYPE soctcp,30,NET
*** end dubious ***
Make sure you're using 7.30.UC7.

The Admin guide left me with the impression that the default for an empty NETTYPE (getting the value from sqlhosts) would be adequate. I spent so much time reading the Admin guide on all the new entries in onconfig, that I neglected to change LTAPEDEV from the template default. > Make sure you're using 7.30.UC7. Yup.
