RE: HELP!!!! Migration from I-4GL to New-Era
Posted in 1995
KC, I'm working with a customer that is having NewEra experiences similar to yours. This particular customer is making the jump from an old Basic-like language on an ancient mainframe to the new world of Relational DB/Unix/Vi/Windows/NewEra. It's been a HUGE leap. Their development has also been gruelingly slow, but mainly because of the huge learning curve. I'm in a similar situation as your "Informix support staff". My background has included Windows and Motif programming (in addition to tons of SQL/DBA etc.). I too attended the same classes with my customer but I seemed to get much more out of it. It depends a great deal on what foundation you have (education wise) to build upon. I've tried to convince them that now would be a good time for a refresher, but they've been too busy. In moving to NewEra, most of our problems have been due to the learning curve. We are having problems, though, with NewEra's memory usage under Windows. We've migrated to version 2.0 now and it has greatly improved the resource usage and eliminated much of the memory leaks. However, we still have problems with -1363 (exception D at nnnn:nnnn) and -4518 (cannot allocate any more temporary string space) errors. They are elusive, being related more to the amount of time the application runs rather than to any particular coding mistake. Those are my experiences as far as you seemed to be after. If you have other, more specific questions, please feel free to write to me directly. Also, I wouldn't mind sharing more information live and possibly putting you in touch with my customer (at their discretion). --Craig (craig@chemistry.utah.edu) P.S. This customers coding efforts are not a migration. This is a from scratch rewrite of what the old non-relational application did. > > I'm having problem (very slow) migrating our Hospitality application on > Informix-4GL-RDS to New-Era.
