While I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of June's comments in this and other emails in this thread, I think it is not correct to say that "Informix has discontinued support for 5.x." Informix provides the same support for 5.x as it does for 7.2x, (Category 3) according to the product lifecycle matrix at http://www.informix.com/informix/services/ilink/plc/plclist.htm . (Available with a support contract or certification in the ICPP.) This means (from the same web site): "In this category, there are no enhancement or maintenance releases scheduled. Product fixes are limited to level one and two defect fixes and are obtained via interim releases. Limited Maintenance products are currently for sale. All support programs are available for products in this category; however, customers should be advised that no support contract will be initiated after the "Move to Category Four" date." The "move" date for 5.1x is "not before the end of 2000." With popular support from end users this date is likely to be moved even further into the future. I cannot speak for Legato's support policies. Doh! I didn't even check. I just took it for granted that it was true if Richard cited it as the reason for his decision to upgrade. Well, I'm glad that the reports of 5.x's death were greatly exaggerated. Still one of my favorite products. > Pedantically, > > Clem > _______________________________________________________________ > Clem Akins (aka clem@informix.com) Menlo Park x5937 > Customer Course Development Informix Software, Inc > Last seen: Staying afloat during heavy rains in Berkely, CA Well, to match pedantry with pedantry, Berkeley is spelled with three e's. :-) June -- june_t@hotmail.com Grounded in Palo Alto, living on brownies and chocolate chip cookies Please do not send Informix questions to this account. I would add 'Please do not send spam to this account' but I suppose I would be wasting my bits.

I was told by Siemens (they are our OEM vendor of Informix and our support contractor) that Online 5 support was to be discontinued. I hardly ever needed support for Online 5, but another big problem is that there was no way (except backing up to disk, which wasn't a good option for lack of disk space) to include Online 5 into our Legato Networker based backup scheme.
