PHYSDBS onconfig in IDS 11.5
Posted in 2009
Will asked whether a pre-11.5 instance using the PHYSDBS onconfig parameter (physical log in a non-root dbspace) would migrate cleanly to IDS 11.5, since PHYSDBS no longer appears in onconfig.std. Others reported successful 7.31/9.4 upgrades, with one noting the log stayed in its dbspace even without PHYSDBS set. John Miller (IBM) clarified that in v11 the physical log is moved with onparams or the SQL Admin API task("alter plog", dbspace, size), which works online; editing PHYSDBS/PHYSFILE in onconfig and restarting reportedly changes only the file, not the instance, despite contrary documentation. That doc discrepancy was left unresolved.

Hi everyone. I know with IDS 11.5 the PHYSDBS onconfig parm has been removed. From what I understand it is still supported, it just does not appear in the onconfig.std file that comes with IDS 11.5. I have poked through the various 11.5 manuals (including the Migration Guide, Admin Guide, Admin Ref, getting started, etc) and I can't find anything in there that really explains the ramifications of having a PRE-11.5 database that DOES have the PHYSDBS parm used (with the physical log placed in it's own (non rootdbs) dataspace)). I believe I can just leave the PHYSDBS parm in the IDS 11.5 ONCONFIG and the physical log will continue to reside in its current dbspace (a different dbspace than where the rootdbs is in) and all will be well when I migrate the databases from it's current IDS 9.4 FC7 to IDS 11.5 FC4. My question.....does anyone see any potential problems with this? Thanks, Will
I'm still in the middle of my conversion process from v7.31 to v11.5. So far I have two instances up and running. I just added the PHYSDBS parm to the onconfig (PHYSDBS dbphysical). I have other issues I'm still addressing, but none related to that as far as I can see. Full disclosure: I have not converted our prodution instances yet.
We are testing 9.4 to 11.5 and have not added the PHYSDBS variable to the new onconfig and it kept the log in the correct space with not complaints on all of our testing so you may not need it. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of RUSSELL ROTH Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 4:01 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: PHYSDBS onconfig in IDS 11.5 [16530] I'm still in the middle of my conversion process from v7.31 to v11.5. PHYSDBS can only be set using onparams.
Take care: "PHYSFILE - The size, in KB, of the physical log on disk"
can only be changed using onparams. After initialisation all changes to this
parameter
in ONCONFIG will have no efect on the size of the physlog, even if you get no
error
and the note "parameter PHYSFILE modified in onconfig from ... to ..." in
online.log.
It is what it says: CHANGED IN ONCONFIG, NOT IN YOUR INSTANCE !!!

Just to be clear there are two ways to move the physical log in
IDS version 11:
1) onparams
2) The SQL Admin API command
dbaccess sysadmin
EXECUTE FUNCTION task("alter plog", <dbspace>, <size> );
EXAMPLE
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
EXECUTE FUNCTION task("alter plog", "plogdbs", "100 MB");
In version 11 the physical log can be moved while the system is online.=

In the doc for 11.10 (Administrator Reference), we get some misleading
info (though, maybe I missed a fix-list for this doc):
"Another way to change the size or location of the physical-log is to
edit the ONCONFIG file and restart the database server." (pg. 13-4)
The message log, if you're watching it, does tell you that this doesn't
actually work.

That method, editing ONCONFIG and restarting the server always worked in the
past. Isn't it still valid?
