7.3 on SCO SHMBASE question
Posted in 1999
User installing Informix Workgroup 7.3 on SCO 5.02 encountered shared memory initialization errors. The issue was resolved by adjusting SCO kernel parameters, primarily SHMMAX, to values recommended in the Informix release notes. SHMBASE itself was not the problem; kernel configuration parameters needed tuning to support the required contiguous shared memory blocks.

We are installing Workgroup 7.3 on a SCO 5.02 box. When we try to
initialize memory we get the following error. Considering the warning
in the documentation against changing the value of SHMBASE I want to
poll the wisdom of this group. Has anyone else seen/solved this error?
The first two lines are a UNIX error message. SHMBASE is set to
0x82000000L in the onconfig file.
17:36:20 shmat: [EINVAL][22]: shared memory base address illegal
17:36:20 using 0x82080000, needs 0x80400000
17:36:20 mt_shm_init: can't create resident segment

SHMBASE is not the problem. Read the release notes file IDS_7.3 for
kernel configuration parameters which may need to be configured in to
the SCO kernel. The values presented should be seen as minimums, they
are simply the first values the porting team found that work.
Set the parameters, build a new kernel, and reboot.

Also, the non-existence of the /INFORMIXTMP dir with perms set to 660
informix:informix may cause this msg.

One possibility is that OnLine is ignoring the SHMBASE set in the
ONCONFIG file. Another, much more likely one, is that the kernel
is not configured to create big enough chunks of shared memory. If
I recall correctly, the SHMMAX parameter has to be 0x400000 (4MB).
This has to do with the way SCO allocates shared memory; each new
block is allocated on a 4 MB boundary, and OnLine requires all the
shared memory to form a contiguous block. So, the only way to
reconcile these differences is to set SHMMAX to 0x400000, or some
multiple thereof.
I also think the error message is pointing out a (minor) bug in
OnLine; the using part is correct, but the needs part should be
0x82400000.

Thanks to all who responded. It was indeed primarily SHMMAX needing to be increased. Tuning most of the kernel parameters to those recommended by Informix worked, even though some such as SEMMAP were larger than the largest value recommended in the SCO documentation and generated warnings when the kernel was relinked. I was also questioning the values in the release notes because there were one or two parameters in the notes that do not appear in the tuning programs. Dale Boyce dale@radpro.uchicago.edu
