Problem was in our programming so we found work around. Details are as follows: When updating table with unique composite index, we didn't specify the full index in application. Should have reported dupe error. Unfortunately, the engine would update the first record and drop the second record from the index. This only occurs when indexes are DETACHED. Fragmentation is irrelevant. This problem has been identified as a bug by Informix(the id escapes me). Problem not fixed up through 7.13. I do not know if this problem exists on other platforms. Post follow up if this is relevant to your particular experience.
