This one made my day.

Not a technical support thread but an anecdote and ensuing banter. Art Kagel reports that a large unnamed Informix site (50+ servers) that was persuaded to migrate to Oracle 11 — reportedly lured by a free site licence — found a ported application ran three to four times slower than on its old Informix 7.31, and speculates that staying on IDS and upgrading to 11.50 would have widened the gap further. Replies joke about hardware upgrade costs, vendor incentives and management blaming the DBAs. No technical problem is diagnosed and no resolution is recorded.

Just one more anecdote to share around. A major, nameless, Informix site with over 50 servers online, who was talked into converting all of their servers into Oracle in the past year, is having major performance problems with several of the handful of already ported applications and their databases. One such application, still in conformance and performance testing before moving to production, is reported to be three to four times faster running under Informix 7.31 than under Oracle 11! Imagine if they had taken advice given them 4+ years ago and upgraded to IDS 9.40 and kept up through IDS 11.50 which cumulatively would have given them an additional 20-35% performance improvement over 7.31 (I think that works out to another 100% additional performance over Oracle)! Now, I do not doubt that the Oracle instances could use some tuning, the users' DBAs are not Oracle novices they have had Oracle servers online alongside IDS for over 6 years and IB there are Oracle consultants onsite helping with porting and configuration, but I for one don't think anyone will be able to coax 300% additional throughput out of those servers. -- Art S. It would make my day a lot more if they were to chuck Oracle out and stick with Informix. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com
But it's a *free* site license! ;-) Art On Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 2:08 PM, Obnoxio The Clown <obnoxio@serendipita.com>wrote: > Art Kagel wrote: > > Just one more anecdote to share around. > > > > A major, nameless, Informix site with over 50 servers online, who was > talked > > into converting all of their servers into Oracle in the past year, is > having > > major performance problems with several of the handful of already ported > > applications and their databases. Art Kagel wrote: > But it's a *free* site license! ;-) So they'll get the free database license but have to massively upgrade their hardware? That helps. Still, the one crumb of consolation that I can find is that Oracle still deems it necessary to give licenses away to win over Informix customers. I wonder if your stupid user has worked out yet what upgrading the 50 servers is going to cost them? Pride cometh, etc. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com
They haven't even begun to think about upgrading the hardware, they're just beating up on the DBAs for now. Well, you know the old saying.. =B3You can always tell an Oracle consultant, but you can=B9t tell =8Cem much=B2. And.. =B3who was talked into converting all of their servers into Oracle in the pas= t year=B2, so the translation is....some managing executive decision-maker for Company X was given some kind of perk or trinket (vacation in Hawaii?) by Oracle to make the switch? Well, I at least hope that decision-maker got a vacation in Hawaii paid for by Oracle, I'd hate to someone gut the performance of their company=B9s ERP system for a cheesy gift-in-kind, say like a new iPod Nano. Believe me, I=B9ve seen worse before, a lot worse. Rant-o-matic gripe-of-the-day. Oh that=B9s a great example of good American corporate management philosophy. =B3The beatings will continue until moral improves....=B2 Although, I think DBA=B9s should not respond in-kind... Because psychologist, Benjamin Spock PhD., said we shouldn=B9t use corporal punishment on executive management, it might damage their little personalities. But, for those of you stuck in the trenches of I.T., who want to just get a glimpse of the executive/vice-president way-of life, simply do the followin= g and you=B9ll have your once-in-a-life-time experience as an executive: Step 1: Get a large wooden ladder..... Alias =3D "Organization" Step 2: Get a large axe..... Alias =3D "MBA degree" Step 3: Climb "Organization" Step 4: Look down at supporting legs of the ladder you just climbed..... Alias =3D "I.T. Employees" Step 5: Repeatedly swing the sharp-end of "MBA degree" at "I.T. Employees" until "Organization" starts to break. Step 6: Blame "I.T. Employees" the break-down and for failure to support th= e "Organization"..... Alias =3D "Bad Economy" Step 8: Go to the United-States Congress and ask for bail-out money because your "Organization" is in danger of collapse because of the "Bad Economy". Step 9: Get a huge year-end executive bonus from bail-out funding for the complete collapse of the "Organization". Step 10: Repeat steps 1-9. I promise you'll have hours of un-ending fun and enjoyment. Jonathan Smaby =B3If you do what you=B9ve always done, you=B9ll get what you=B9ve always gotten.=B2 ~Carl T.
