OAT and AUS (Auto Update Statistics)
Posted in 2009
Question: can OAT's Auto Update Statistics (AUS) be given a default RESOLUTION/confidence factor, and how do AUS-generated UPDATE STATISTICS commands differ from IBM's seeding script? John Miller (IBM) answered that AUS reuses whatever confidence, resolution and sample size were last used on a table, so you simply run UPDATE STATISTICS once manually at the desired resolution; he also suggested using the newer SAMPLING SIZE option instead of confidence. Art Kagel noted his dostats utility can do the evaluation and schedule stats runs via the IDS scheduler for those not using OAT. The question about specific AUS-vs-script differences went unanswered.

Is there a way within OAT to state a default RESOLUTION and confidence factor within AUS? Art, You mentioned there was a difference between UPDATE STATISTICS commands AUS generates vs. what the the seeding script (located at http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21137764 generates. Other than (possibly) the aforementioned resolution/confidence factors, what are those differences? And are there plans underway to remedy those differences within OAT? Thanks in advance. AUS will use confidence, resolution & sample size which was previously run on the table. So just run the tables once for which you would like to have high resolutions. As for confidence, I would probably suggest that you use the new SAMPLING SIZE options as I think it will be a more meaningful to DBA and application programmers than confidence. John F. The latest release of dostats can schedule the stats run the same as AUS does to run later using the IDS scheduler. The dostats run does the equivalent of the AUD evaluation phase and schedules the actual run for later as you specify on the commandline. Is that what you are looking for? Art Art S. John, What percentage of the total row count of a table would you recommend be used if one is generating a variation of the "seeding" script from your webpage (see below)? Are you building a new webpage for 11.50? :) Take care.
