Whoa there ! What happened to 'the customer is always right'
philosophy ? Even if we aren't right all the time, you're not suppoed
to tell us that, are you ;-)
Okay, the first thing to be said is 'read paragaraph one to see what
is wrong' - now, let's see if we can be a bit more constructive here.
How about a utility that DOES only mark down chunks as available ?.
Maybe a couple of checks to see whether there are more things to worry
about than a simple I/O error indicating that you should get your
disks checked/switched on, and recommend a dbexport / re-initialise/
dbimport as soon as possible ?
More often than not, in mho, the 'oversighted' administrator has had
his sight focussed on the disk drive lights, and has more than likely
realised that it is not flickering in the manner he/she is accustomed
to. Nervously poking the on button, a victory jig is danced, only to
arrive at the tbmonitor utility and discover that whatever random
combinations of key-presses are performed, that chunk obstinately
remains off-line.
As far as the danger of such a utility goes - is there anything really
more dangerous than tbmonitor's Parameters Initialise utility ?
However, I do agree that is is a very dead horse that I have been
flogging here, so I shall turn my back and despairingly throw my whip
into the suggestions box.
