3 parameter/onstat questions

I just got off the chat-with-labs with John Miller. He left me with 3 questions I am hoping to get more info about, having failed to get anything useful from the version 10 docs.
I'm on ids10.0.fc5.
1) He strongly recommended having the chunk mode set to expanded 'always'. He said that if it's not that way, I am suffering in performance because there is a translation that needs to go on with each IO between the old type of IO and the new type. ( something like that ).
--So is this correct for my version ?
-- If it is, then onmode -BC 2 would do it, is there any danger to that, or does it take a while , or is it instantaneous. ( yes I know I can check, but I would have to make an instance to check it on ).
2) He mentioned vpcache, as that it can be monitored with onstat -g vpcache. He said that the vpcache is very useful for multicpu setups (us ). When I run that onstat command, it shows a bunch of zeros, indicating that I am not using it. How do I start using it, if its even possible on my version ?
3) Is there a way I can determine if my other caches ( dictionary, dists, sql ) are needing to be made bigger ? A guidliine on that ?
Thanks for any pointers in the right direction. The docs have not been very useful here.
Thanks,
floyd

You have to add the paramenter VP_MEMORY_CACHE_KB to your onconfig
file, so you'd add it then have to bounce the server. I'm not sure
it's in 10.00.fc5, but it does appear to be in 10.00.fc6. However, if
the onstat was there, then I think that's probably a good indication
that the feature is also there.

Run onmode -BC 1 then run onmode -BC 2.
Took a few seconds on my play instance, as always test on a full size
test instance.

It is the DD_ DS_ and PC_ onconfig parameters, check the IDS 11
manuals for the latest guidance.
I would set the
a) Do select count(*) from syscolumns for all databases and set DD_
parameters to be able to cache everything.
b) Do select count(*) from sysdistrib for all databases and set DS_
to be able to cache everything.
b) Do select count(*) from sysprocedures for all databases and set
PC_ to be able to cache everything.
Then run a sample workload and use onstat to check how much actually
has been cached.
Then set them to what was used +10%.

The docs are useful, try reading the IDS 11 ones.
