I would suggest the following: i) separate termcap files according to your value of $TERM; ii) do you have terminals with different keyboard layouts but the same value of $TERM? If so you need to put some stugg in place as each keyboard layout will need a separate $TERMCAP file - the value of i) above them becomes apparent when you can have multiple TERMCAP files for the same value of $TERM but with different strings for the various functions! iii) Informix also document some of this in one of their books and this also is worth reading in addition to the O'Reilly book mentioned in another reply; iv) When I'm trying to do this sort of job, I find 'cat -v' most useful, as is using 'CtlV' in 'vi' to allow me to enter values from the keyboard - though I don't advise leaving unprintable characters in termcap files. v) You could use 'infocmp' to get a basic starting termcap file from the machine's own terminfo entries for $TERM.
