Use of ODBC from Java client

I have a requirement to use IDS through ODBC from Java client. The JDBC port is not exposed to external world due to security reason. However, ODBC can be accessed through ODBC proxy. I know I can use HTTP Proxy Servlets over a middletier, but I am worried about the performance impact of this and also scalability. So, I was thinking if in some way I can access IDS from Java application using ODBC. The JDBC Type 1 driver (JDBC-ODBC bridge) can provide probably help. But I am using IDS 11.x and am unable to find corresponding JDBC-ODBC Bridge for this version. Any pointers, suggestions or better ideas would be helpful.
