9.30 "too old"?

I guess I should be glad we're upgrading to 9.4 then. But IBM says: "revised end-of-service date for IDS 7.31.UDx is September 2009; the new end-of-marketing date for IDS 7.31.UDx is September 2008 " http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/731-eos.html Perhaps someone could explain the differences here between unsupported, end-of-service, and end-of-marketing. The software vendor for our app that uses Informix hasn't even certified their product on anything higher than 9.4 and 64-bit isn't even certified yet (and reportedly has issues). I'm not too concerned about 7.x, but would like to know exactly how "too bloody old" 9.4 is when we finally move to it in a couple of weeks. -----Original Message----- From: forum.subscriber@iiug.org [mailto:forum.subscriber@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Obnoxio The.... If I recall correctly: end-of-marketing = you can longer purchase this product. end-of-service = unsupported. However, some confusion obviously exists because 9.30 was described as "too bloody old", yet you quote the info for the 7.31 line. The IDS 7.x and 9.x lines are handled seperately, and have different EOS and EOM dates. One does not relate to the other. Yes, this is not intuitive, but we're used to that with Informix. :-) Michael Hoffman > > I guess I should be glad we're upgrading to 9.4 then. > > But IBM says: > > "revised end-of-service date for IDS 7.31.UDx is September 2009; the new > end-of-marketing date for IDS 7.31.UDx is September 2008 " > > http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/731-eos.html > > Perhaps someone could explain the differences here between unsupported, > end-of-service, and end-of-marketing. > > The software vendor for our app that uses Informix hasn't even certified > their product on anything higher than 9.4 and 64-bit isn't even certified > yet (and reportedly has issues). > > I'm not too concerned about 7.x, but would like to know exactly how "too > bloody old" 9.4 is when we finally move to it in a couple of weeks. > > > -----Original Message----- > From: forum.subscriber@iiug.org [mailto:forum.subscriber@iiug.org] On Behalf > Of Obnoxio The.... > > Gregory S. .... said: > > > This is Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.30.UC1, > > PS your version of IDS is unsupported and far too bloody old. > > >
Danny, There is a document in the IBM web-site caled the product life-cycle which defines the state of each product. Like you I work with a 3rd party app that has only been supported for 9.4 for the past 6 months or so. They have no definite dates for supporting IDS 10. So, should I cause my customers great upheaval to move them to IDS 9.4 and then see them migrate to 10 within a few months or should I stay on unsupported 9.3 which is working very well? As to not supporting 64-bit our vendor also doesn't support 64-bit but we have ignored that and we have been using 64-bit IDS with 32-bit tools for some time. It sounds like you might be using the same vendor - SAGE - and if so let me know and we might be able to work together.
