Training Day is a one day technical training event for WAIUG members at the University of Maryland during the March spring break. Six half-day sessions are currently planned. These are very practical technical how-to sessions. The cost will be $10 for members and $30 for non-members. This includes a box lunch. Training Day Sessions: Informix IDS Server Monitoring and Tuning by Lester Knutsen <lester@advancedatatools.com> This session will focus on how to get the best performance out of your Informix Database Server. It will explore ways to monitor your server using the Informix command line utilities and the sysmaster database. It will exam how to optimize the performance of your database engine. Lester will also present some web scripts for monitoring your Informix server over the web. SQL Query Optimization by Kevin Fennimore <kfenn@uci-consulting.com> This discussion will cover the following topics: indexing strategies, steps used in optimizing queries, output from the Set Explain command, and query optimization techniques and examples. There will also be time to discuss queries provided by the group. If you have a specific query you would like to discuss please e-mail it to me in advance at <kfenn@uci-consulting.com>. Please include relevant information (schema, counts, indexes, etc.), your name, and telephone in case I have any questions. Using Java to Access UDO Features by Shawn Swart <sswart@fugen.com> This session is for Java programmers who will use the JDBC 2.0 API to connect to Informix IDS/UDO databases. The first half of this session will cover the features of the API that continue from prior versions. The second half of this session will cover the features of the API that are new in the 2.0 release focusing on their use with UDO. Specifically, topic covered will include accessing named row types, distinct types, opaque types, and SQLJ via JDBC. Shawn is the Manager of Product Development at FuGEN Inc. His focus for the past two years has been designing products against IDS/UDO with Java. Beginners Guide to Web Enabling your Informix Database (using Perl on NT) by Peter Schmidt <pschmidt@advancedatatools.com> Here is the problem...I had a nice fast NT workstation at home, with the new Informix IDS 7.30 loaded and running. I loaded my personal videotape database with over 600 entries. But here I am - an old Informix-4gl programmer on a system with no 4GL language available. I knew I wanted to use my web browser to manage the database, but I couldn't justify purchasing the web-datablade with my budget (of zero). This session is about how I solved that problem easily and very inexpensively (*free*) using Perl, Netscape and Informix on NT. The session is also a primer on Perl from an Informix-4GL programmers point-of-view. Data Warehouse by Jack Parker <jparker@epsilon.com> Jack will be building a warehouse in the seminar itself, with slides. This will include: Lay out a simple business situation which calls for a warehouse; discuss why it needs a warehouse; step through the key decisions that need to be made as though we were developing a proposal; model it; discuss structures needed to make it all successful; transformations; load it; QC it. Each portion has its own breakout - for example loading will go into High Performance Loader and how to make it work well. If there is time I'll also go into tuning for Loading/DSS/Index/Statistics. The proposal step will cover sizing, staffing, timelines, things to tell the client. Jack's session will provide a roadmap for building a data warehouse. Developing Data Blades by Steve Kelley <skelley@umiacs.umd.edu> Building datablades: What are blades? How to create new datatypes, quickly. How to build more complex datatypes. Steve will start with an overview of the IUS, covering topics such as complex data types, inheritance and user-defined processing. Next he will go over datablade concepts/strategies. This will include opaque types, indexes on opaque types, VTI concepts and various tools needed to construct datablades. Finally, he will present one or two examples of datablades he has written or worked on in some detail. Steve Kelley is a 2ed year graduate student at UMD working under the direction of Nick Rossopoulos. Directions: From the Capital Beltway/Interstate 495 north of DC, take exit Route 1 south. Continue south on Route 1 about 2.5 miles and turn right onto Campus Drive, then immediate right onto Paint Branch Drive, proceed 1.5 blocks to A.V. Williams Bldg. on right after intersection with Stadium Drive. Park on the left in Lot G.
