Reversion 11.70 to 11.50
Posted in 2013
Frank was reverting IDS 11.70.FC7 to 11.50.FC8 on RHEL5, and the revertibility check listed ~100 tables with outstanding in-place ALTERs that had to be cleared with dummy updates (UPDATE tab SET col = col WHERE 1=1). He asked how to identify which specific columns needed updating. Art Kagel and Alexandre Marini answered that only the table list matters, not particular columns: updating any single column to itself rewrites all rows on each page to the current schema version. Art added that, for speed, choose a column that is not indexed (and not part of the primary key) so index pages don't have to be updated. Frank thanked them; no further issues reported.

Hi, Folks, I am reverting IDS11.70 FC7 back to 11.50FC8. Linux redhat 5 Lot of outstanding in-place Alters need be handled first( see below) Some tables have many columns , not sure which columns need dummy- update. Any idea to have a fast script/SQL to find these outstanding columns? Thanks, Frank Database noaa is not revertible ... Checking database noaa_ansi for revertibility ... Database noaa_ansi is revertible ... The following tables have issues that are blocking reversion. Tables with In-Place Alter. You don't need to know which columns need updating, just which tables. Any dummy update of any column in the table will cause all of the rows on a page to be rewritten using the newest version of the schema. So, just pick any column that isn't a primary key column and update it to itself. Art Art S. Oh, for performance reasons, best to do the dummy update on a column that is not indexed at all so that index nodes do not need to be updated. Art Art S. Hello. When the engine mention "in-place-alters", it means there are different data page versions, for each table mentioned. You must do exactly what it says, for each of the tables on the list. You don´t have to run an update in all/some specific columns. Just take one field from the primary key, for example, and update 1=1 will do the trick for you. Hope it helps. Regards. Hi, Just à curiosity question, what is the reversion reason. We have many performance and stability problems with 11.7 and we work hard to change code and params ... We actualy have many open pmrs. The status is not too bad now. The reversion is an open issue but what to after that for the next upgrade... Sam, Honestly, reversion is not a pleasant work for us. But 11.70 ER does not work well for us, we have no other options at this moment. Wish 12.xx ER will work for us next.
